Sample summary writing passages

Here are a list of summary writing exercises that may be useful for you to review.

In these exercises, a passage is given and a written summary is required in less than 120 words (same as the CXC English A exam). A sample summary answer is provided at the end of each passage.

These exercises can be used as practice for answering the summary question in paper 2 of the CXC English A exam.

These exercises will be most useful to you if,

1)  You read the passage first, and

2)  Attempt to write a summary of your own.Then,

3)  Check your written summary against the model answer that they have provided.
